This started off a little dry as there were quite a few characters to establish and a lot of bouncing around between them. Eventually, many of these characters come to the same location and the story becomes easier to follow and more fast-paced.

The ideas in the novel are relatively unique and clever. I definitely enjoyed the creativity.

I bought this book primarily because I LOVED "A Fire Upon the Deep" and "A Deepness in the Sky." Be forewarned - this is nothing like those books. Those books had some real mind-binding concepts and an intricate plot with well developed characters. This is a straightforward Grade B Sci-Fi novel. It's set in a future where the common folk are rebelling against the oppressive overlords. Honestly, I had to fight to make it through this book - it was just kind of slow, boring and the characters were no one I really cared about. If you're looking for something else from Vinge, look elsewhere.
I'm a big fan of Vinge, and I thought this book was really good, though not at the same level as "Fire on the Deep" or "Deepness in the Sky".

As a scientist, I have to admit that I really liked the idea of scientists forcing peace on the world through their inventions. And, no doubt, it would be a disaster if this were to occur in real life...

The only quip I have with the book is that none of the characters were very compelling, due to a lack of development. Superior character development is one of the biggest reasons why I would recommend reading "Fire" and "Deepness" before this one.
If you are interested in stories about people with extraordinary intelligence this is for you. I've known some of the people described in the book.
Yepper, a cautionary tale appropriate for our political and social environment too. Haven't read any of Mr. Vinge's books in a long time. He has a good, straight forward writing style. Doesn't tip his hand too quickly, does not use a Deus ex machine plot solution too often. Not by any means an artful writer, but if you want something that will as this book did with me, upset the hell out of you and make you look around for an axe handle and night vision goggles, well, then, this is your book, this and the sequel, Marooned in Realtime.
It was an okay book to read. However, I found the characters fairly humdrum. The plot was also quite predictable. I knew the good guys where going to win. Wili's abilities were fantastical and his actions flawless. How could this group of people fit together any better or been any luckier. Unfortunately, there weren't a lot of explanations as to why it all was happening. Why was Wili so smart? What was done to make Jill so omniscient? There just a lot more depth could have gone into the science of stuff. Maybe this was written before the author could imagine the science of cyberspace and AI.
It is incredible given how old this book is that the science part of the sci-fi holds up so well. Vinge wrote this in the early eighties and while some of the event didn't come to pass (as they are dated in the 1990s in the book), you could just move some of those dates forward and the book would be almost entirely cohesive with present day. If only all Sci-fi could be this good.
On the positive side, this slightly dated dystopian novel of the near future is suspenseful and for the most part, easy to read and compelling, once the reader accepts the hypothetical world in which it takes place. Of the two principal chartacters, the young prodigy, Wili is the more captivating. The older Paul is the old-style romantic genius scientist on a one-man quest to save the world from evil, and not incidentally, get even with someone he's hated for fifty years. As such, he's not as belevable as Wili.

Even less believable is the entire story line. The principal bit of technology around which it's based seems more like magic than science - even the supposed experts have no idea why or how it works. I also had trouble reconciling the world of 2050 envisioned by the author, though it might have played better thirty years ago when he wrote it. It just didn't seem viable to me. And I was a bit disappointed that after all the philosophical and moral buildup, the climax of the story revolved around a pretty garden-variety chase and thrill scene that turned out fairly predictably. On the whole I found the ending less than satisfying.
The Peace War (Across Realtime, #1) by Vernor Vinge

Originally published in 2003, this novel is still a great example of hard SciFi. The characters are multi dimensional, and well textured. And yes, the drive the plot, and drive it well. Plus we have the BDO (Big Dumb Object) to contend with.
Our heroes are an unlikely band of survivors, that come from various pasts. But Paul, in particular, has a fifty year grudge to settle, and oh yeah, destroy the current world domination scheme. Part of his continuing anger results from how the Peace Authority misuses the aforementioned BDO in rising to power.
The storyline is well conceived, and well written. Plenty of surprises along the way, and this is a very compelling read.
