In the fall of 1919, Thea Hansen’s world seems to spiral out of control. First, her dearly loved father dies suddenly from the influenza epidemic sweeping across the globe. Then her brother, Lloyd, returns from The Great War transformed into a brooding stranger. Could it get any worse?

Yes, indeed. With a brutal murder close to home and her brother as chief suspect, Thea’s wildly spinning world doesn’t look like it will slow down anytime soon. She’s lived in bucolic Blessing, Kansas, all her life, after all, and hasn’t had much experience with out-of-control worlds.

Still, the bright and level-headed Thea knows a good thing when she sees it, and she sees it in the person of Augustus Davis. As her brother’s former commanding officer, Gus Davis knows Lloyd is no murderer and as a skilled attorney, he’s determined to prove it. Together, Thea and Gus will deal with unexpected malice and obsession, with assault and fear, with secrets and suspects, and in the end, ordinary little Blessing will hold a lot of shocks for Thea Hansen. Passions revealed. Lies uncovered. Murderers exposed. But what Thea is willing to do to keep her world balanced and her future settled may be the most surprising thing of all.

Smiling at Heaven concludes where the first novel of Hasley’s Laramie Series began —in Blessing, Kansas. With 40 years between events in the first book and last, the story of the Davis family and their extended lives comes to a satisfying conclusion.

Smiling at Heaven (The Laramie Series Book 6) - edition by Karen J. Hasley. Literature & Fiction eBooks @ . Reviews

I really enjoyed all 6 books of this series, and really like the author's description of life back in that era. Once I start reading a story as good as these, it is hard to put it down, and with this series you really get to know the characters very well. read by Becky Sealey.
The author was able to create the time and place of the novel. While reading the story I felt like I was back in that time period and walking the streets of Blessing, Kansas with the heroine. Characters seemed well developed and story line consistent. Influenza and the first world war had effected almost every family. The automobile and electricity had just begun to change the landscape. A murder mystery and a romance and a western. Cool.
I enjoyed this very solid story and the characters in it. It was nostalgic in describing an earlier time after World War I and did a great job of making thoughtful observations of the changes in a small town through the eyes of the main character. I enjoyed the romance element because it was so in keeping with the tone of the whole story, practical and unsentimental. I've read many romances and this one had an authentic depth sometimes missing. It caused me to think about my blessings and appreciate my life more than ever. The mystery was similarly handled. There was violence, but not for effect, and it was told in the same practical way. It might not be everyone's "cup of tea" but I liked this novel very much.
I just finished this 6th book in Karen J Hasley's Laramie Series. I LOVED each and everyone of these books. They are written somewhat as two trilogies and yet tied to each other. They are historical and take place in the late 19th and early 20th century. Each and everyone is well written and has every element that ,to me, makes a great story....strong heroic male as well as female lead characters, mystery, romance. And I especially appreciate her long epilogues that tell so much about not only the people in this story you've come to love but some from the other books.
Thea Hanson's view of her small town changes after her brother comes back from war. Set in 1919, the charm of Blessing, Kansas, wafts around Thea's daily life. She happily runs the family emporium and is a valued member of her community. She loves her acerbic grandmother and her new Oldsmobile truck, not always in that order. Life is good, predictable, until her veteran brother, still suffering from the psychological effects of the war, is arrested for murder. Thus begins the puzzle that Thea must solve; part Nancy Drew, part Agatha Christie. To help her is her brother's captain, now a lawyer, Gus Davis, who is a man of character. Together they encounter creditable bad guys, some known and some posing as upright citizens, while their attraction to each other builds. Supporting characters are delightful and strong enough to make their individual stories worth a book of their own. I received this book free on , but will make it a point to get more from this author.
This series is one of the best stories I have read in many years. Beginning in post Civil War Kansas, each book introduces its own cast of characters, every one memorable. We follow history from both ends of America, through two world wars, until we end up back where it began in Kansas. This is not a dynasty story. Rather we begin each book with no clue how any of it is intertwined to the one before.

I began and planned to read these as I usually do, reading one and skipping to another couple of books before returning to the next one of this series. However, I realized at the end of Lily's sister that it would be impossible to do that with this series.

I would say to readers that they need to curl up in a comfortable chair and prepare to meet some of the strongest female characters you will ever know.
This story started so well, but it did It take long for this reader to lose interest. There is a murder and a lawyer has been retained, one that both the accused and his sister have faith in. The lawyer is a former Captain in the military and has close ties with the accused. Then out of nowhere the sister of the accused receives an anonymous letter with import information as to why the victim may have been murdered. But what does the sister of accused decide to do? She with holds the letter and information to investigate herself. In this reader's opinion the story lost credibility and I no longer wanted to continue reading. Thea had all the qualities of a strong female, then the author reduces her to the usual standard heroine with ridiculous judgement.
This book is difficult to describe. About 95% of it is clean, adult fiction that pulls one in and hangs onto them. But the other 5% is the dark side of the crude, the vulgar and the raw emotion of the few bad characters. Even that, however, is not graphic. So on balance it is like a throwback to the mid-60's; not gratuitous language but more shocking as a result. In context it is very effective, If disconcerting.

The other item that is hard to fairly characterise is what I will loosely call feminism. Any author of historical fiction runs the risk of projecting than current mores backwards and imposing them on the identity of their characters. This book generally avoids that trap but it feels to me like there is a bit more 2016 projected back on 1916 than is historically accurate, especially for small-town America in the heartland.
