Wow... This book is incredible! It's now one of my top favorites. So many characters, but all of them are so well developed that it isn't at all confusing. I seriously never wanted to put this book down, and I wish that it could have gone on longer. Brundage is a fantastic writer! Her writing is so discriptive (and not so much so that it becomes boring) that the story really comes to life for the reader. I almost didn't buy this book because of the negative reviews, but I'm so happy I trusted my own instincts. Yes, it is true that there are no quotation marks used during any of the dialogue. This was frustrating for me for the first few pages, but then I didn't even notice it for the rest of the book. Anyway, I can't wait to read this again in the future!

This is my first experience with Elizabeth Brundage and I must say that I am impressed. She has worked so much into the novel, yet makes it all flow effortlessly; a fine achievement considering the book is a nonlinear murder mystery. The author begins with a gruesome crime and then, a la "Law And Order" of television fame, proceeds to establish all that led up to it and beyond. The many themes explored by Brundage include the nature of sociopathic behavior, the ripple effects of evil deeds, elements of criminal investigation, examination of kinds of marriages and relationships, urban vs. small town life, ghosts residing in haunted houses, family abuse and suicide. An impossible concatenation of disparate elements in a single book? Possibly. But this is why I rate "All Things Cease To Appear" so highly. The author writes in an engrossing fashion, with a sure hand, developing a small town full of characters which live and breath convincingly, setting the action forward and backward in time, filling in details and backstories smoothly, without losing credibility or sacrificing style. Never condescending to her characters, she often invites us into their minds and hearts. The setting north of Manhattan and the time period encompassing the 1970's, are also convincing. This is much more than a simple crime novel or a whodunnit. It is an accomplished, thoughtful, wise work which I enthusiastically recommend and which spurs my interest in her other books.
I am simply amazed at all the people who are given this book 1 star and saying it drags and it slow and has no quotation marks. This is a great piece of literary fiction. I read about 5 books a week and this is the best one I have read in a long time...It doesn't need quotation marks...works better without them. The author has a true talent and I can imagine the work that went into this masterpiece, I would compare her to John Hart who wrote Redemption Road among others,,,I feel I should apologize to this writer for all the negative remarks she got. Do yourself a favour and buy this book. You will get all wrapped up in the story and I will remember it for a long time
Brundage's latest novel is her best yet a tragic, transcendent book that marries a haunting story to wonderfully crafted prose, characterizations and imagery. It's at once murder mystery, ghost tale, family drama, and love story, as well as an evocative portrait of the people and landscape of upstate New York, where most of the action takes place. The heart of the story is gripping the 1979 murder of a young wife and mother whose toddler daughter is in the house during the crime. From that moment, Brundage works backward, forward, and outward, interweaving not only the victim and her family but also the community into the story. Moving back and forth in time, the narrative requests, but also bountifully repays, the reader's attention; every choice, from the unconventional treatment of dialogue to the way the narrative moves, is thoughtful and well judged. I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone looking for a nuanced, suspenseful, and beautifully written novel. It's also a perfect book club choice thanks to its rich array of thought-provoking questions. To put just a few of them, perhaps a bit over-simply How well can we truly know anyone? Is there such a thing as evil? Does spirit or energy persist after death? How do we, as well as our communities, heal from violence and loss? This is a novel that will prompt fascinating conversation, as well as provide an absorbing read.
Brundage is an extremely skilled writer, who has crafted a darkly disturbing and highly atmospheric tale. The characters are well drawn and complicated, but the bleakness and violence of the story made me set it aside occasionally before returning to it. These elements may have been necessary to create the specific tone of the book, but despair seemed to permeate the tale to an unremitting degree. This book is multi-layered and complex, filled with damaged characters mired in loss and heartbreak. Brundage expertly illustrates how the past continues to haunt the present, every action a ripple tainted by what came before. This is an eerie, haunting book that is not for everyone, but the writing is evocative and powerful.
This should have been a 5 star review. Where was the editor for the last 60 pages or so? I loved the book and the characters and then it all just fell apart. Plot holes you could drive a truck through.

Spoiler Alert! Were the police so incompetent they couldn't search the house well? Damning letters found after years of renters in the house? And unbelievable plot turns the 19 year old eventually becomes a DA who prosecutes George? Oh please! And what was with all the detail about the Lawtons and their daughter? Such a shame. This had real potential.
