Skin Tight Carl Hiaasen Books
Another Mick Stranahan story from the master of South Florida/Sex/Murder/Comedies, Carl Hiassen. This one with a different cast of characters than in the other Stranahan story I've read (though I'm only five books into Hiassen world, so who knows?).If you appreciate these books for what they are, this is comedic diversion at a very good level. A hard bitten law enforcement (former) protagonist, young bunny, and thinking woman for adult female companionship figure into a murder mystery. The murder is prospective and the target is Stranahan, targeted because of his work on a long ago missing person case that threatens to expose the king of South Florida plastic surgery as a butchering fraud. Death by swordfish and a hungry hand eating barracuda also figure into the story. So does Geraldo Rivera, with his named changed, but an obvious take-off. The only downside is an ending that is forced to some extent to take the story to a conclusion (seriously, couldn't the woman who made the expose tape and then lost it just record another copy?). But again, this works for light escapist reading.
Great for plane rides and vacations, which is where I do most of my Hiassen reading.

Skin Tight Carl Hiaasen Books Reviews
Carl has a good way of killing off his characters. Several of them meet exquisite fates in Skin Tight. There could have been a few more jokes or innuendos about the deaths to give the book a lighter feel. And poor Mick just wants to live out in Stiltsville in peace. Initially, I thought the actress who goes in to have cosmetic work done was the same college co-ed that slept with Mick early in the story. Turns out they are two different women. This is a really good, fun read.
This was a little disappointing. Hiaasen is always funny, but it seemed somewhat contrived in this book. It was fun to read, but had more blood and gore than usual. The characters are well developed and interesting. The narrative moves quickly and has some surprises. I enjoyed reading it, but I don't think it's a really great book.
Mick Stranahan is a retired Florida State investigator, just trying to enjoy a peaceful life away from his 5 ex wives. His peace is ruined one day when someone shows up trying to kill him. Then there is the boat with a camera man, "investigative reporter" and producer that are hanging out around his stilt home on the water off of Miami.
There was a missing persons case 5 years back that Mick wasn't able to solve. A young woman disappeared on her way home from a nose job....but now the nurse who assisted in the surgery is talking, not to the police, but to Reynaldo Flemm from TV's "In Your Face". She claims that something went wrong during the surgery and that Mick missed obvious clues.
Rudy, the plastic surgeon has hired a hitman to take out Mick, truly believing that Mick could pin the murder on Rudy. When the first hitman fails, Rudy hires Chemo, a former Amish man with very very bad skin to finish the job.
Great fast moving story.
This is Hiaasen at his best. His way-over-the-top pulp fiction bursts into the room like a drunken senator in dishabille, and his lurid characters and plotlines demand attention, like the bleach-blonde hussy straightening her rumpled cocktail dress behind said senator.
Skin Tight satirizes and lampoons the cosmetic surgery industry and the desperate, shallow subset of society that supports that field. Hiassen has his formula, you may recognize the darkly witty antihero, the female interest, the cocky villain who gets increasingly frustrated throughout the tale, and the villain's goon, who gets strangely injured, limps onward for several chapters, suffering horribly and humorously and finally meets a fitting end. But you're going to forget about that and enjoy the ride! Hiassen is always reliable for a story that will surprise and shock you.
This novel is a favorite of mine, only topped by Lucky You. Dive in and enjoy.
Oh, one warning Don't eat during the last third of the book. Some of the surgical descriptions and happenings are graphic and not for the faint of heart.
If you are a fan of Carl Hiaasen, then this review is not needed. You KNOW it will be great, hilarious, immensely entertaining, and will leave you salivating for the next crazy-wonderful output from this talented author. If you are not a fan of Carl Hiaasen, then welcome to Earth. How is life on Mars? Carl Hiaasen specializes is writing satirical fiction about Florida, taking pot-shots at developers, the self-obsessed, non-environmentalists, snow birds, and other types of folks. Along with it is a convoluted, seriously funny tale that is entertainment at its finest. You really don't have to start with Carl's first efforts to understand any of his books, though some of the characters do appears again and again. Just pick this one, or any other, and jump in. You won't regret it.
The writing is clever, fast-paced and hilarious. Set in the state of Florida, the author, Carl H., makes merry with his take on the casual and deeply imbedded corruption within the state government and judicial system. The villains are over the top in ways that only Carl H. can imagine. The good guys, especially the key protagonist, Mick, are just as rough as the bad guys, but usually less greedy for material things and definitely more inclined to dispense an Old West version of justice clearly not sanctioned by the state. The key female characters are often good looking and shallow for the most part - love interests, at times. At other times, vain and self-centered noodges, but don't let THAT little detail wreck your enjoyment of this book. I was cracking up over some insanely crazy detail on every other page!
