Detective Stan Novak’s best friend, reporter Terry Reynolds, is found next to his car - he’s been stabbed and his watch and wallet are missing. No one witnessed the murder and Novak hasn’t got one decent lead to follow. He’s angry and ready to bust heads to get a break.

When Deputy Chief James Galecki wades in and takes over the case, Novak suspects he’s protecting someone but he isn’t in a position to do anything about it.

Something stinks and industrialist Bill Piermont won’t stand for it - his only daughter’s husband is dead. He hires private investigator Nick Borman and gives him instructions find the killer, no matter who it is or how much it costs.

Borman is set on a collision course with some of the most powerful people in the city and the body count keeps growing, the closer he gets to a cold-blooded killer.

The Borman Factor A Nick Borman Thriller eBook Robert Lalonde

Set in Canada, this book does exactly what it says on the tin. It is a thriller that I read through in record time. A little bit bloody at times but nothing wrong with that and I can see Nick Borman in a prolonged successful series of books for the author. This was a really good read with just the right amount of action, conspiracy and twists to keep me interested. I’m fussy when it comes to thrillers, they can be a dime a dozen in many ways repetitive and many give me the sense of déjà vu. Not so here. The Borman Factor stands out through style and invention. There is a perspective switch using 1st and 3rd person narrative and that can be a disaster if not done right. I generally don’t enjoy most 1st person perspective despite its current fashion but here we have an author who knows what he wants and uses this to great effect when it is introduced. It benefits the plot and works so well to switch the story up and move the plot along proving the authors ability as a writer of some style. Enjoyable, clever and well written, worth 5 stars for me.

The Borman Factor A Nick Borman Thriller eBook Robert Lalonde Reviews

Meet Nick Borman, corporate security specialist, and sleuth. He's smart, tough, and knows his way around a criminal investigation. When a Toronto investigative reporter is killed in broad daylight, the journalist's family hires Borman to investigate when the police seem unwilling to look beyond a robbery gone bad theory.

Borman goes to work and quickly develops information that leads him to believe the reporter was killed by a professional assassin and that the crime was only staged to give the appearance the motive was robbery. As he continues digging, he starts to find the threads of a conspiracy to silence the reporter, involving a crooked real estate developer and some dishonest city officials on the take.

The Borman Factor, a crime thriller, is a real page turner. The characters are well-developed, it has a fast-paced plot, and the author did a good job of crafting some very suspenseful scenes that often kept me on the edge of my seat. The story gripped me from the very first chapter, and I had to keep reading to find out what happened next. The story itself was plausible and believable. While not one of those thrillers where there is non-stop, heart-pounding action, the type that leaves you feeling exhausted, it did have an acceptable amount of action and held my interest throughout.

Few books are perfect, and The Borman Factor is no exception. I do have one minor criticism. Given the title and the fact that the book is advertised as the first novel in the Nick Borman series, I think it reasonable as a reader to expect more of a focus on Nick Borman, the central character, than I actually found the case to be. He wasn't introduced until the fifth chapter, and at one point in the book, he seems almost forgotten as the story focuses far more on the supporting cast than the protagonist. Towards the end, Borman does return to center stage, but in my opinion, it came a bit late in the book.

Still, overall, I found The Borman Factor an entertaining and enjoyable read. As the kickoff to a series, there is definitely a good foundation established for the author to build on and I'm definitely interested in reading the next book in the series. Since perfection is after all an unrealistic standard to judge any book by, the small criticism I mentioned didn't dissuade me from rating the book as highly as I did, and I have no reservations at all about recommending it to other readers who enjoy crime thrillers.
I enjoyed the author’s terse, no-time-for-wasted words, Hemingway-like writing style. It kept the pace moving forward at a clip and suited this taught, multi-dimensional thriller. It reminded me of the Ludlum books where action and murder blend with political corruption, cover-ups and a money trail that requires an investigative journalist to cut through. In this case, Borman is at home with investigating corporate conspiracies and untangling the complex knots they inevitably entail, and at getting at the truth past the impenetrable wall of lies.

The police procedural elements also deliver. The characters, including the cops are realistic and the real conflicts they face with trying to investigate a case properly during an election year when no one wants the truth, just the cover-ups, at least until the election is past, is portrayed in a poignant fashion with the consummate split-loyalties and political maneuvering.

I loved the social commentary about the times interspersed with the story. i.e. “Road rage used to mean giving someone the finger or cutting them off with your car, not shooting their tires out while the car is moving at the speed limit!” But just as well showcased are those who manage to hold on to their humanity as times get tougher for us all. “This was one of the reasons he liked Novak so much. The man was being reamed out for trying to find his best friend’s killer and he asks how you’re doing.”

This is my first book by the author, but I will be happy to read more.
As an avid reader of crime thrillers, I’ve found there are a lot of pretty decent books for sale in this genre.

There are a few that go past decent to pretty good.

Precious few go to the next level, where this one sits – REALLY good.

It’s set in Toronto, one of my favorite cities on the planet. Being in a location that to some Americans is a bit exotic certainly didn’t hurt.

It’s also written in something of a – I hope it’s ok to say this and I hope the author will be flattered rather than offended – James Patterson style. Specifically, I mean short sentences, short paragraphs, short chapters, a theme that spiders out but comes together nicely, much dialogue, a lot of first person alternating to third person occasionally. I could go on, but it’s a similar approach to the style that makes Patterson’s books eminently readable (but Lalonde doesn’t include so many meaningless killings that the reader becomes desensitized to murder).

I’m not one to spoil an ending, so I won’t here; just be aware that you won’t figure it out until you get there. At that point, you may pat yourself on the back for figuring it out, though you won’t have actually done so until you get to the end.

All in all, if this is your type of book, give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.
